Whenpeople think ofCalifornia, they think of warm, sunny beaches crowded with peopleswimming in the ocean. That's Southern California! Northern California is a whole differentenvironment. The boundary between Northern and Southern California, oceanenvironment-wiseis around Point Conception, which is north of Santa Barbara. The watertemperatures, the waves, the appearance of the beaches, and the marinelife are very different. Southern California beaches are broad andsandy, with gentle waves, warm water, and warm-water fish, such as yellowtail, barracuda, and bonito. Northern California beaches tend to be rocky,wind-swept,with huge waves crashing into sheer cliffs. The ocean waters here arecoldandoften treacherous, with undertows, rip currents, and great whitesharks. The fish up here are coldwater species, such as salmon, sturgeon, andstripedbass. The beaches up here are great for scenery, tidepooling, fishing, and exploring, but not for swimming, with a few exceptions. Thatdoesn'tmean there's no place to go swimming outdoors. You just have to knowwhere.Besides the ocean, there are bays, rivers, and lakes. Here are some ofthe best places I've been to or have heard of:

Saltwater
Tomales BayState Park, Hearts Desire Beach: This is the most pleasant place togo swimming in Northern California. The water is warm. Inverness Ridgeshields the beach from the fog and cold winds that whip Point Reyes tothe west. There are no waves. If it wasn't for the tides and the saltywater, you'd think you were swimming in a lake. The water is shallowfor a long distance, which makes for safe wading. The beach is smalland can get crowded on summer weekends, but a short hike in eitherdirection can take you to similar and much less crowded beaches. Some beaches along Tomales Bay are only accessible by boat.
SantaCruz area beaches: When the weather heats up in the South Bay, Hwy17 gets jammed with traffic heading to the beaches of Santa Cruz. Whileother beaches on the coast are likely to be chilly and foggy, the SantaCruz area beaches are more likely to be sunny. The most popular beachis the Main Beach, which is next to the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalkamusement park. This beach is very popular and can get crowded in thesummer. Other Santa Cruz area beaches which are suitable for swimming are Santa Cruz HarborBeach, Twin LakesState Beach, NewBrighton State Beach, Seacliff StateBeach, RioDel Mar State Beach, ManresaState Beach.
Lover's PointBeach,Pacific Grove: The Monterey-Carmel area has some of the most scenicbeaches in the world, but they are mostly not suitable for swimming. One exception is tiny Lover's Point Beach in Pacific Grove. It islocated in a small protected cove, surrounded by cliffs. The water iswarm and calm. Excellent tidepools and climbing rocks are nearby. Thisis a great place for kids.
CrownMemorial Beach,Alameda: The waters of San Francisco Bay are warmer and calmer than thePacific Ocean, but there are much fewer swimming beaches. The problemis that the Bay shoreline is muddy. If you tried to enter the Bay atmanyplaces, particularly in the South Bay, you could get stuck in the mudup to your knees. One exception is Crown Memorial Beach in Alameda. This is a 2.5-milelong sandy beach, but the sand isn't natural. It was dredged up anddeposited there. The water is shallow for long distances and is finefor wading and swimming. The north end of the beach has rocky tidepools(see below) and the CrabCove Visitor Center.
CoyotePoint Recreation Area, San Mateo: This is one of the very fewdecent swimbeaches on San Francisco Bay on the Peninsula. Coyote Point is a verypopular park, right on the BayTrail. It is on a rocky point of land, a former island, just southof San Francisco International Airport. It has several playgrounds, picnic areas, a yacht harbor, and the Coyote Point Museum forEnvironmental Education, now called CuriOdyssey at Coyote Point. The park has a long stretch of sandy beach, withsmall wind-whipped waves. The east side of the beach is popular withswimmers and waders. The west side is a launching point to windsurfers. The water is calmer than at Coyote Point.

ChinaBeach, San Francisco: This is the only San Francisco Beach outsidethe Golden Gate that is suitable for swimming, if you don't mind coldwater. It is in the Seacliff district, located in a small covesurrounded by high cliffs, and is somewhat secluded. It is adjacent tothe much more popular (and crowded) Baker Beach. The beach has arestroom and showers.
CrissyField, San Francisco: Located on a site that was once a militaryairfield, Crissy Field is now part of the Golden Gate NationalRecreation Area. Though it was the site of many historicflights early in the 20th century, when the National Parks Service tookit over in 1994, they called it a 'derelict concrete wasteland.' Afterextensive restoration, it was opened to the public in 2001. It nowconsists of a tidal marsh with bridges, a long, sandy beach, sanddunes, a paved segment of the San Francisco BayTrail, a large grassy field, and the CrissyField Center. The shoreline promenade leads north to afishing pier, the WarmingHut, which has a gift shop and cafe, Fort Point, and theGolden Gate Bridge. The beach is a popular launching area for windsurfers. Intrepid swimmers brave the cold waters of the Bay. Theprotected, warm waters of the tidal marsh invite kids to play in them.
